‘Civil War in Hertfordshire’ – A talk by Alan Thomson, which will include the Failure of the Royalist coup; Volunteer regiments for Parliament; Eastern Association & the Militia Committees; Paying for the war; Fortification of St Albans; The New Model Army & Impressments; The impact and long term effects of the war on the St Albans area.

 

Wednesday 20th February     (No regular meeting at Memorial Hall)

Kimpton Players’ Old Time Music Hall - Members will be offered an

opportunity to attend the annual show for “an evening of frolic and fun!”

We intend to take one or two tables according to demand, and so we will

sit together. Tickets can be bought through the history club for this occasion (only) and will be available at the January meeting.

‘Pull Yourselves Together Girls’ – A talk by Josh Tidy (Curator of 

Letchworth Museum) about the history of Spirella in Letchworth.

 

Wednesday 17th April                  (Lounge)

‘Paper Making – A talk by a representative of Frogmore Paper Mill

The history of Frogmore Paper Mill, the site of the world’s first mechanised paper machine, and information on hand papermaking and the spread of mechanised papermaking.

      

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th May - Kimpton May Festival Weekend

The History Group’s Exhibition in Church House, with videos, photos and displays on historic happenings in and around Kimpton over the last century.

 

Wednesday 15th May          (No regular meeting at Memorial Hall)

'Supper, Socialising and Snippets of History' - A sociable evening at Penny Pepper's 16th century farmhouse 'Tallents'. Members are asked to contribute towards a 'bring and share' fork buffet. Refreshments will be provided for a small donation.

‘History of Rothamstead – A talk by Roger Plumb about the History of

Rothamstead Manor Estate from 1212 to modern times.

 

Wednesday 17th July     (No regular meeting at Memorial Hall)

‘A Blue Guide tour of Redbourn’ - Members are invited to a tour of the village with Elizabeth Eastwood. Transport will be by members’ cars. Meet outside Kimpton School at 6.00pm to share lifts. Contribution £2.00 per head.

World War II activities of the Air Ministry at Hughenden Manor between 1940-44 -  A talk by Nicholas Witherick, House Manager at Hughenden (National Trust).

‘The River Lea from Luton to Leyton’ – Fascinating talk by Richard Thomas, following the main course of the River Lea from its source at Marsh Farm to Leyton.  He will tell us about the history of the river, how it came to be, the buildings and the many points of interest along the River Lea and the Lea Valley.

Kimpton’s History’ -  Annual talk by John Pollington about photos and documents in the History Group’s extensive archive.

 

Wednesday 18th December          (Lounge)

Christmas ‘Do’ History, Fun, Games and Quizzes with Bob Finch

Members will be asked to bring a plate of food for the buffet, and to pay a contribution towards wine/soft drinks. Guests are welcome to join in the fun, which will start at 8.00pm.
